Profile

Masa Muraoka is Director of International Center and Professor in Department of Applied Chemistry at Osaka Institute of Technology. Masa was born in Kyoto and received his undergraduate and master degrees in Engineering from Niigata University in 1994 and 1996. From 1996 to 1999 he attended graduate school (Ph.D. course) at Osaka University, working in the lab of Prof. Isao Ikeda. His Ph.D. research involved the synthesis and structure of C2-symmetric chiral crown ethers. He then moved to University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) in USA, where he was a Postdoctoral Fellow from 1999 to 2002. He worked under the guidance of Prof. Thomas W. Bell, focusing on the development of redox switchable cryptands for molecular recognition of cations and the application of separation and purification technology for drinking water. After moving to Osaka University (working with Prof. Yoshito Tobe) and NAIST (working with Dr. Ichiro Yamashita), Masa started his independent career as the position of Lecturer in the Osaka Institute of Technology (OIT) Applied Chemistry Department in 2005. Masa was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009 and to Professor in 2016 of Applied Chemistry, Engineering. Research in the Muraoka Group focuses on the synthesis of novel stimuli-responsive rotaxanes and their application as molecular machines.
